Residency Overview
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Maimonides Medical Center is proud to serve the very diverse population of Brooklyn. Our patients come from all over the city as well as all over the world. We have one of the busiest labor floors in the State of New York, with almost 6,000 deliveries per year and residents are involved in all aspects of patient care. Our robust gynecologic surgery program aims to make graduates of our program proficient in open, vaginal, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery. We train six residents per year, and one fellow per year in each of the two fellowships. Our residents leave our program well trained in all aspects of OBGyn care and ready for anything!

Scott Chudnoff, MD, Msc
Department Chair
Dr. Chudnoff received his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School and his Masters of Clinical Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Chudnoff is an active member of AAGL, APGO, ASRM, the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, and the American Association os Sex Educators. Since starting as Chair in June 2021, Dr. Chudnoff’s life and career has truly come full circle, as he was born at Maimonides Medical Center.

PGY1 – 18 weeks OB, 10 weeks GYN, 10 weeks Night Float, 2 weeks SONO-Simulation, 2 weeks ED, 2 weeks Outpatient OBGYN Subspecialties clinic
PGY2 – 10 weeks OB, 12 weeks GYN, 4 weeks Outpatient GYN Subspecialties, 10 weeks night float, 4 weeks Family Planning, 4 weeks REI, 2 weeks research, 4 weeks SICU, 4 weeks Outpatient Antepartum
PGY3 – 10 weeks OB, 10weeks GYN, 12 weeks Night Float, 4 weeks outpatient antepartum, 4 weeks Family Planning, 2 weeks research, 2 weeks GYN elective
PGY4 – 8 weeks OB, 18 weeks GYN, 4 weeks Night Float, 8 weeks GynOnc, 8 weeks UroGyn
*Each academic year includes 4 weeks of vacation, taken in 1 or 2-week blocks based on resident preferences
*Night Float system covers Sunday through Thursday nights
*Calls are overnight Friday night, Saturday 24-hour, or Sunday day. Those on-call Saturday have Friday off as their pre-call day.
*Monday mornings are dedicated educational time for all residents. Residents present recent cases, journal clubs, tumor boards, chair rounds, case based lectures and Morbidity & Mortality conferences.
*Once per quarter we focus the half-day on optimizing resident wellness through meditation techniques, fun activities, massages, and other aspects of personal wellness
Research
Residents and fellows are actively engaged in research throughout their time in our department. Residents have meetings in small groups once a month to discuss projects, figure out hypotheses, walk through the methodology, and talk about IRB and publication submissions. These are led by faculty with many years of research experience including multiple NIH grants. Our PGY2s and PGY3s also have dedicated research time throughout their year to help them move their personal projects forward. We have research staff and volunteers in the department who help residents and fellows with their projects. We have 3rd year OBGyn residents present in June so they have time to get abstracts and publications submitted prior to fellowship application season or graduation. Our residents have been very successful with presentations at local and national conferences as well as publications, even during residency. How To Apply
Applications can be submitted this fall through ERAS at www.aamc.org/eras. Complete details and timelines for individual programs are available on the ERAS website.
Three letters of recommendation are required. We review a dean’s letter, transcript, USMLE/COMLEX scores etc. Both J1 visas and a limited number of H1 visas are accepted. No visa type is guaranteed and a passing step 3 result is required by match day for the possibility of an H1 visa. Step 2 CK passing is strongly encouraged.
We do not have minimum score requirements; however, we do look at number of attempts. We do not require US clinical experience, but it is favorable. We prefer recent graduates, however, we will consider five years from date of graduation with clinical experience. In all, we review the application in its entirety. As all applications are accepted through ERAS, we do not accept paper applications. We do not offer pre-matches.
