Maimonides Low Cesarean Rates Shine
Setting the Standard for New York State Hospitals
At Maimonides we deliver more than 8,000 newborns every year. Our team uses their extensive clinical expertise for natural childbirth deliveries, as well as during high-risk procedures.
With new guidelines issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and current research recommending the benefits of vaginal delivery in the absence of maternal or fetal complications, we at Maimonides have dedicated ourselves to using cesarean sections only when necessary. In 2011 (the latest figured available from the NYSDOH), we delivered 7,968 babies with a 23.1% C-section rate, far below the comparable statewide results of 34.2%.
Expectant mothers should understand that C-sections are invasive abdominal surgeries, and may bring risks to both mom and baby. If you are thinking of asking for a cesarean delivery, you should know the risks. C-Sections have been shown to include greater risk and complications in future pregnancies, such as uterine rupture, placenta previa, placenta accreta, bladder and bowel injuries, and the possible need for hysterectomy. Scar tissue or adhesions may cause long- term pain. C-section delivery on an expectant mother's request "should not be performed before a gestational age of 39 weeks."
The entire team at Maimonides is committed to ensuring that you and your baby are healthy and strong. Our expert OBGYN physicians, surgeons, midwives, nurses and staff are here to assist you and answer your questions. Together, we will offer you superior comprehensive care, while we welcome your newborn into the world.
