New Report Shows Maimonides Has Best Heart Attack Patient Outcomes in the State

The New York State Department of Health just published its first-ever look at heart attack mortality rates. Few will be surprised to learn that Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn outperformed all other hospitals in the state.

The report focuses on survival. And while it’s clear that most hospitals do as well as expected for heart attack patients, the cardiac team at Maimonides provides its patients with a decisive edge—saving significantly more patients than expected.

What’s more, this is clearly not “news” to most people in New York, because the report also shows that Maimonides treats more heart attack patients than any other hospital in the state.

“This is another clear indication of the exceptional cardiac care being provided to our patients,” said Kenneth D. Gibbs, Maimonides President & CEO. “And this is why more and more people are choosing to get their care right here in Brooklyn at Maimonides. Our doctors are simply the best.”

“This new report confirms that our team approach at Maimonides is the best approach,” said Jacob Shani, Chair of Cardiology. “No one handles heart attack emergencies better than our multidisciplinary team of experts.”

This is only the latest bragging right for the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Institute. Based on earlier reports from the New York State Department of Health this year, Maimonides is #1 in the state for cardiac angioplasty and stents. This follows on the heels of achieving outstanding patient outcomes in heart valve surgery—better, in fact, than any hospital in Manhattan.

How the NYS Reports Are Created

The process of reporting, sorting and risk-adjusting this information takes time, so the newest report reflects cases performed in 2015. New York State indicates significantly better-than-expected outcomes with a double-asterisk. Maimonides is the only hospital in the state to receive the prestigious ** in two categories, placing the heart program in its own elite category.
