Residency Overview

Welcome to the General Surgery Residency Program at Maimonides Medical Center.  Our nationally renowned faculty is committed to the education of residents with the mission of producing well-qualified, technically excellent surgeons who function at the highest level while providing well rounded compassionate patient care.

 

Residents participate in a wide variety of cases across all specialties including colorectal, breast, ENT, Pediatric, bariatric, vascular, thoracic, surgical oncology, and more.  Operative experience is enhanced by the use of cutting edge minimally invasive technology including robotic surgery. In addition, the surrounding culturally diverse communities of Brooklyn further enrich the training experience of our residents.

Curriculum Overview

Every Monday grand rounds speakers who are nationally renowned give lectures on the most relevant topics in their surgical specialty. Our weekly core curriculum is a combination of interactive lectures given by experts in the field, chief residents, and junior residents that follows the SCORE curriculum. We supplement the basic science curriculum with multidisciplinary conferences focused on developing comprehensive management plans for patients including Breast, GI, and Thoracic tumor boards and Pelvic Floor conference. Weekly Trauma/SICU journal club reviews the most relevant literature. Other weekly educational activities include Simulation Lab where resident practice a wide variety of technical skills from basic suture and knot tying to hand sewn bowel anastomosis, Chief rounds where discussion of interesting cases on the patient wards, morning report where cases from overnight call are discussed, and most importantly Morbidity and Mortality conference.

How To Apply

  • WE REQUIRE (3) LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION AS WELL AS STEP I and STEP II (before considering your application)

  • WE PREFER A SCORE OF AT LEAST 240 IN STEP ONE AND TWO ON FIRST ATTEMPT.

  • WE DO SPONSOR HIB, JI VISA IF NECESSARY- WE REQUIRE YOUR STEP III BE TAKEN BY MATCH DATE TO ENSURE AN H1B VISA BE ISSUED IN TIME FOR A JULY 1ST START DATE.

  • NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY IN THE U.S. OR ELSEWHERE.

  • WE PRESENTLY HAVE FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATES IN THE PROGRAM (PRELIMINARY, AND CATEGORICAL). PERCENTAGES ARE NOT AVAILABLE.

  • Eligible candidates must submit their application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) PORTAL. THE LAST DAY APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED THROUGH ERAS IS NOVEMBER 15TH IF NECESSARY. WE WILL STOP REVIEWING APPLICATIONS ONCE OUR QUOTA HAS BEEN FILLED.

  • WE HAVE 5 CATEGORICAL POSITIONS, 3 PRELIMINARY POSITIONS AND ONLY CATEGORICALS ARE OFFERED A RESEARCH YEAR.

  • YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE ECFMG CERTIFIED BY THE TIME OF INTERVIEW.

  • CANDIDATES WITH THE LASTEST GRADUATION DATES WILL BE CONSIDERED FIRST.
