Externship Experiences

Child Adolescent Outpatient Service

In the Child Adolescent Outpatient Service, low income or poverty-level families are seen for a full range of services. They are treated using a multidisciplinary approach and involvement with outside agencies, such as the courts, schools and the Administration for Children's Services.

Adult Outpatient Service

The Adult Outpatient Service (AOS) provides group and individual psychotherapy and psychiatric follow-up to adult patients in the community. Many of these patients are diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness. The AOS Developmental Division treats adult patients with mild mental retardation and co-occurring mental illness.

Wellness Recovery Services

Wellness Recovery Services works with adult patients diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness. The program currently consists of a three-day-per-week Intensive Outpatient Clinic for patients with serious and persistent mental illness and a five-day-a-week Partial Hospitalization Program. Many of the services performed are done in a milieu therapy setting and involve a wide variety of groups. Psychological testing, individual therapy and ongoing progress evaluations are an important part of this unit's self-monitoring.

Adult Inpatient Service

The Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit serves adults meeting the criteria for inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. The majority of these patients are diagnosed with severe and persistent mental illness. Externs will have the opportunity to perform psychological testing, group and individual therapy, as well as participate in the interdisciplinary treatment team, family meetings and case conferences.
