The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Center, headed by Jacob Shani, MD, a world renowned expert and scholar, provides residents with a clinical learning experience unmatched by most other programs. Both the volume and quality of the catheterization and other invasive procedures that the residents gain experience in are outstanding. For example, our Cath Lab was the East Coast training center for PTMRs, and remains one of the few places in the region able to perform them. Residents are therefore exposed to the performance of this procedure during their training. Dr. Shani is one of the few physicians in the region to perform valvuloplasty, and the Cath Lab is one of the only places in the area where it is performed.
Maimonides has been awarded the highest ratings possible in the categories of In-hospital+1 month Mortality, and In-hospital+6 Months Mortality for Interventional Procedures(PTCA /Angioplasty, Stent, Atherectomy );Heart Attack (Open Heart Surgery) by HealthGrades.
Another strength of the program is the wide spectrum of cases seen in the Cath Lab. Residents are exposed to the full range of patients diagnosed and treated here. Patients present with a wide variety of cardiac diagnoses including:
- chronic ischemic heart disease
- acute ishemic syndromes
- valvular heart disease
- aortic disease
- congenital disease
- peripheral vascular disease
In treating significant numbers of patients who present with this spectrum of cardiac disease, residents are exposed to the full range of cardiology procedures, including the use of new devices and methods as they develop.
