Why Maimonides Emergency Medicine Residency?

Some of the unique features of our programs

  • Large and Diverse Patient Population

    • Yearly ED visits are in excess of 122,000 including over 33,000 pediatric patients. Maimonides is in the heart of Brooklyn, home to dozens of different ethnic and cultural groups, which provides you with the unique experience of dealing with the varying cultural beliefs and social systems that impact our patients.
  • Emergency Department-Based EMS System

    • The department runs a pre-hospital care division. Consequently, you will have continuous exposure and interaction with EMS staff.
  • Modern Physical Environment

    • The department has over 22,000 square feet of clinical space, five resuscitation beds and a dedicated radiology suite (including a multidetector helical CT).
  • Technology & Ultrasound

    • The department is equipped with over 70 workstations that allow access to all hospital information systems as well as the internet. We utilize a fully electronic medical records system and digitized radiology images via PACS.
  • Simulation Laboratory

    • We have a dedicated simulation lab which is run by Emergency Department faculty. It contains both adult and pediatric simulation models, 5 plasma screen television sets and capability for simulated medical illness and procedures such as cricothyrotomy, thoracotomy, chest tube placement, central venous access and intubation.
  • Level 1 Trauma Experience

    • Maimonides is an official NYS Level 1 Trauma Center and Brooklyn's only Pediatric Trauma Center. Residents spend a total of three blocks dedicated to traumatology. In the PGY-2 year, eight weeks are spent at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, where the idea of the "Golden Hour" was born. Shock Trauma serves as a major trauma referral center and delivers care to over 5,000 trauma patients per year.
  • Concentrated Location

    • All of the ED experience offered in our training program is at one hospital. We believe this removes any adjustment difficulties entailed when training in multiple locations. There will be only three blocks of training outside of Maimonides: one block of selective which may be spent off-site at at the New York City Poison Control Center in Manhattan, and two blocks at Shock Trauma in Maryland.
  • Top Faculty

    • The Maimonides EM residency faculty includes over 40 full-time attending physicians. Members of our faculty have subspecialty training in a variety of fields such as bedside ultrasonography including pediatric EM applications, medical informatics, simulation, toxicology and hyperbaric medicine. Our faculty is committed to providing the perfect balance of teaching, supervision and progressive responsibility necessary to provide the best educational environment for you.
