Active research is essential in our fellowship training curriculum, and fellows are provided full range of exposure to the theories and practice of both basic science and clinical research.

Fellows are required to participate in supervised research in all three years, and protected time is provided in each year of the three years to ensure completion of research projects.  The protected research time is one month each in the first two years and 3 months in the third year.  The curriculum includes the following aspects.

  1. Didactic lectures on molecular biology, cellular biology, immunology technology used in tumor diagnosis; Didactic lectures on designs and analysis of clinical trials.
  2. Every fellow is required to develop a research project of his own, either retrospective study or prospective study, and will be mentored for every step of the project, such as the design, the writing of the project for IRB approval, data collection and analysis, as well as the writing of an abstract.  Each project will start in the first year, and be carried out through the 3 years.
  3. Fellows interested in bench research will be given hands on experience in the lab.
  4. Fellows will participate in the daily operations of various clinical trials in the Cancer Center and will be responsible for patient accrual, obtaining informed consents, on trial evaluation, decision making for further protocol treatment or on dose reduction, and treatment of side effects and toxicities.
  5. Fellows interested in developing a research career will be highly supported for applications for internal and external research funding and allotted more protected research time.

At the end of the three year training, fellows should:

  1. Be familiar with the conduction of clinical trials as principle investigators
  2. Have the ability to design and conduct research studies
  3. Develop a good understanding of basic research techniques commonly used in oncology and hematology
