When the mitral valve is severely damaged and requires surgical intervention, the most important decision for patients and physicians is whether to repair or replace the valve.  In the past, it was standard practice to replace the mitral valve with a mechanical or natural tissue valve.

Currently, the preferred option for the majority of patients is to repair the mitral valve. This allows the patient to keep their own valve and have it surgically reshaped, restoring the valve’s normal function. Since blood clots rarely occur after mitral valve repair, patients who undergo this surgical option do not need to take blood thinners.
