The Top Hospital for Cardiac Lead Extraction in Brooklyn
Experts in removing pacemaker, defibrillator and other leads
Cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators are usually implanted under the skin in the upper chest area. These devices are connected to “leads” which are threaded into a vein to reach the heart, delivering impulses to the heart. While the vast majority of pacemaker and defibrillator systems can last for many years without problems, some patients may need to have their leads removed for various reasons, such as cases in which there is infection, breakdown or malfunction of the lead. Over time, scar tissue may develop around these leads which may make their removal difficult.
The Maimonides Lead Extraction Service is the highest volume center in Brooklyn. As a result of the significant amount of scar tissue often surrounding leads, lead extraction must be performed by specialists who are specifically trained in lead removal. At the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Center, our team of electrophysiologists and cardiac surgeons are expert in removing leads of all types, particularly complex cases. These procedures are performed through an incision over the device, utilizing the latest in laser lead extraction technology and specialized mechanical sheaths and snares, thereby avoiding the need for open heart surgery.
Although complications from the procedure are unlikely, safety is our highest priority and we take multiple precautions for our patients. Each extraction case is performed by a cardiac electrophysiologist alongside a cardiothoracic surgeon. In addition, a cardiac anesthesiologist monitors the heart throughout the procedure utilizing a transesophageal echocardiogram. These procedures are performed in the surgical operating room or in our new state-of-the-art hybrid operating room.
Maimonides is proud to offer the full spectrum of lead management services, and is a referral center for the most complicated cases seen elsewhere.
