Vein Center at Maimonides

Comprehensive vascular services

Varicose veins are not a normal sign of age. They represent circulatory disease. One out of every five women and one out of every 15 men in the United States report that stretched or swollen veins mottle their legs. For many people, disfigured legs loom as a cosmetic concern. Varicose veins, however, can also be painful and cause medical problems.

At the Vein Center at the Maimonides Heart & Vascular Center, several methods are available to remove unwanted varicose veins. Sclerotherapy, a painless procedure using an ultra-thin injection needle, is one of the preferred methods available. The stab avulsion technique, during which long segments of varicose veins are removed through tiny incisions, does not even require stitches afterwards. These effective and safe procedures are performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

Another option is a minimally-invasive procedure known as VNUS closure, which utilizes radio frequency delivered through a catheter that is inserted into a vein through a small incision. This procedure allows patients the benefit of vein stripping but with less pain and quicker recovery time.
