Surgical Critical Care

Our division of Surgical Critical Care staffs 3 major units for the department of surgery:

  1. A 12-bed surgical intensive care unit, focusing on caring for patients primarily with complex general surgical and neurosurgical issues
  2. A 12-bed surgical progressive care unit, where patients receive care focusing on the transition from ICU level care to more routine inpatient floor type medical needs.
  3. 12-bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit, caring for patients after cardiac surgery, including CABG, valve surgery, ECMO, LVAD, and percutaneous aortic valve replacement.

With a focus on patient care, the Medical Center has adopted a multi-disciplinary approach to critical care by utilizing intensivists to manage the care of our sickest patients. Our integrated approach has led to standardized ICU admissions and treatment protocols that have resulted in shorter lengths of stay and fewer complications for our patients.

Our multidisciplinary model is an integrated one including nurses, intensivists, advance-practice practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers, and surgical staff.

All members of our division are board certified or board eligible in critical care medicine.
