Frequently Asked Questions about Bloodless Medicine

WHAT IS BLOODless medicine?

Bloodless medicine and surgery, also known as blood management, is an organized program to minimize the potential risks, hazards and complications of blood transfusions.

Blood management approaches include:

  • Blood Collection and Re-infusion

    • During surgery, you are connected to a machine that “washes” your blood and returns it to your body in a continuous circuit.
  • Build Up

    • Doctors “build up” your blood before surgery with iron supplements and highly-effective medications that stimulate red blood cell production.
  • Self-Donation

    • You can donate your own blood in advance of surgery, eliminating the risk of an allergic reaction.

What support does Maimonides offer for patients seeking blood management services?

In addition, you will receive special, personalized attention from one of our program coordinators, each of whom are available 24 hours a day to meet your needs, as well as your concerns.

What should I do in case of an emergency?
