Frequently Asked Questions about Blood Management

WHAT IS BLOOD MANAGEMENT?

Blood management, also known as bloodless medicine and surgery, is an organized program to minimize the potential risks, hazards and complications of blood transfusions.

Blood management approaches include:

  • Blood Collection and Re-infusion

    • During surgery, you are connected to a machine that “washes” your blood and returns it to your body in a continuous circuit.
  • Build Up

    • Doctors “build up” your blood before surgery with iron supplements and highly-effective medications that stimulate red blood cell production.
  • Self-Donation

    • You can donate your own blood in advance of surgery, eliminating the risk of an allergic reaction.
