Understanding Radiation Therapy
Think of ionizing radiation as laser-sharp scalpel. In the right hands, it can be life-saving. Sixty percent of all cancer patients require radiation therapy at some point in the course of their disease. There is no human tissue that is totally sensitive or totally resistant to ionizing radiation. The essence of using ionizing radiation for healing purposes is maximizing the dose in cancerous tissues, while simultaneously minimizing the dose in normal tissues.
The Department of Radiation Oncology at Maimonides Cancer Center has the equipment, board certified physicians and board certified medical physicists to provide every patient with state-of-the-art evidence based care, with highest quality and attention to individual needs.
