Orthopedic Treatment Approaches

Staying healthy means staying informed about different orthopedic conditions that you or your loved one may encounter. The Department of Orthopedics provides comprehensive medical and surgical techniques to treat a wide variety of orthopedic conditions.

Medication Therapy

Maimonides orthopedic specialists always explore other medical therapies before considering surgery. The goal of our physicians is to reduce pain and discomfort using the least invasive treatment available. Oral medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs and pain relievers are often considered to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. If these medications are unsuccessful, steroid or artificial joint fluid injections may be a better option. These injections can relieve pain, swelling and inflammation.

Surgery

Surgery is the cornerstone for the treatment of many forms of orthopedic issues today. The technology involved in orthopedic operations has evolved dramatically, offering smaller, less invasive procedures. Our physicians use these innovative techniques in order to lessen trauma and ensure a more rapid recovery.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation Medicine provides a multi-disciplinary approach which includes: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy. Most of the evaluation and treatment occur post-operatively, on a daily basis during the patient’s hospitalization. Overall goals of rehab therapy are provided to assist the patient in becoming self-sufficient in as timely a period as possible.
