Cancer Treatment Approaches
Surgery
Surgery is the cornerstone for the treatment of many forms of cancer today. Operations for cancer have evolved dramatically over the past two decades in favor of smaller, less invasive procedures. Unique approaches to treatment sequencing are also frequently employed, improving clinical outcomes.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy is central to the treatment of most cancers today. Experienced radiation oncologists, dedicated medical physicists and therapists design precise radiation treatments that minimize the risks to patients. Employing the very latest technologies, including intensity modulated radiation therapy and remote afterloading when appropriate, we strive to maximize the possibility of cure and minimize the risk of radiation side affects. With regular, rigorous and sophisticated quality assurance testing, our radiation therapy unit has received recognition as one of the safest in the country.
Systemic Therapy
Systemic Therapy is one of the most rapidly evolving subspecialty areas in the treatment of cancer. Regarded as both technically masterful and highly compassionate, our medical oncology team brings the highest level of experience, knowledge and skill to matching disease with the best treatments. These treatments include chemotherapy, hormonal treatment and new biological treatments.
Imaging
Our imaging specialists use the finest tools available including Brooklyn’s only 3T MRI, which provides the highest level of diagnostic imaging; the most advanced digital mammography and imaging systems; digital stereotactic biopsies; state-of-the-art ultrasounds and Gamma Imaging (BSGI). We offer minimally invasive biopsies that frequently prevent the need for surgery.
Pathology
Our Pathology team has rich experience in diagnosing a wide range of diseases, especially those with questions of cancer or borderline cancers. The pathology department provides expert review and diagnosis of biopsies and other tissue specimens, including tissue workups from other hospitals. Our laboratory provides on-site tumor evaluation.
Clinical Trials
We participate in a variety of research studies and clinical trials funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health. Patients are informed of ongoing clinical trials and new treatments whenever appropriate to their particular diagnosis. To learn more about clinical trials and what you should know, click here>
