Dr. Catherine Canary, a developmental-behavioral pediatrician at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, attended the University of Michigan and completed an intensive 6-year integrated premedical-medical program. She earned her BS in biomedical sciences in 1978 and her MD in 1981.
She completed a 3-year pediatric residency at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital and went on to UCLA for a 2-year child development fellowship. She is board-certified in general pediatrics and sub-specialty board certified in developmental-behavioral pediatrics. She evaluates children with a variety of developmental and behavioral concerns including delayed motor skills, delays in talking and communicating, learning and attention issues, and possible autism spectrum disorders.
After completing her fellowship and working for a few years in the Los Angeles area, she moved east and has worked in New York City in a variety of settings since 1988. For several years, she was medical director at New Alternatives for Children, a foster care agency that specializes in the placement of children with chronic medical and/or developmental problems.
Her hospital affiliations have included St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Hospital Center, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Lincoln Hospital, and Mt. Sinai Medical Center. She previously held faculty appointments at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, New York University School of Medicine, and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She has most recently worked in a developmental pediatric group practice in the Albany area and held a faculty appointment at Albany Medical College.
She has lectured extensively about developmental issues to physicians-in-training, students and professionals in related disciplines such as physical and occupational therapy and social work, as well as to parent groups.
Besides helping families of children with developmental concerns, Dr. Canary enjoys being involved in women’s and children’s programs at her church. Her other joys in life include caring for her family, recreational running, and baking. |
