Treatment of Children with Diabetes
Svetlana Ten, MD
Director, Pediatric Endocrinology
Our approach to treat children with diabetes is innovative and revealed great results with better HbA1c and decreased hospitalization days for readmission. We have an individualized plan for each family, 24/7 availability of a physician on call and our approach is self-empowering of the patient. We have more than 15 publications in peer reviewed journals, sharing our experience in the treatment of diabetes.
For children with type I diabetes, our program offers a unique team approach, providing training and management of insulin pump therapy from shortly after diagnosis, for both new and long-standing diabetes. This is a radical departure from the traditional care, with its multiple daily injections for children. It has revolutionized their care. As well we are widely using glucose sensors for monitoring blood glucose levels with great results.
There is novel and aggressive management of diabetes type II, using a combination of insulin sensitizers and early use of insulin therapy, as well as early introduction of insulin pump therapy when needed.
In addition, screening for pre-diabetes is standard practice. Classes for diabetes education and support groups take place monthly. Special attention is given to properly diagnose monogenic diabetes that can be frequently misdiagnosed and unnecessarily treated with Insulin or other medicines that don’t work, as in the case of genetic diabetes.
Our nurses are real organizers and providers of this excellent care. Chloe Williams, RN, CDE provides diabetes education and newborn screening. She also oversees clinical trials and registries with diabetes. Kim Jawin, RN, CDE provides diabetes education, short stature education and GH education. She also provides dynamic endocrine tests and oversees clinical trials and registries.
