Dr. Laraque message from ChairIn February of 2012 Community District 12 was deemed to be "Kid City" having the highest number of kids age 5 and under.  This district was also deemed among the most diverse with a multi-cultural, multi-lingual and immigrant population of children and families.  Community District 12 encompasses Borough Park, Kensington and Flatbush areas served by the Infants and Children's Hospital of Brooklyn.

Dr. Mara KaramitopoulosMaimonides Infants and Children's Hospital welcomes Dr. Mara Karamitopoulos 

Dr. Karamitopoulos, a fellowship-trained pediatric orthopedic surgeon, joined the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in September 2011. She treats a variety of orthopedic conditions including traumatic, congenital, and neuromuscular. Primary Care
The historical management of children from 2 months to 2 years with UTI has been diagnosis by urine catheterization or suprapubic aspiration, and treatment with antibiotics. Further management often led to procedures such as urethral catheterization and VCUG which exposes patients to invasive procedures and radiation.  The new UTI guidelines from 2011 offer more flexibility in the diagnosis of UTI and provides more specific criteria for radiographic evaluation of children from 2 months to 2 years with no other source of infection.  Read More >
 
 
Education
If you've been on the floor in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a few changes.  For one thing, the resident team has been out-and-about on the floor in the mornings, instead of sitting in the conference room.  Also, there is a red or a blue dot sticker on every patient chart and door nametag.  Finally, you may have been directed to "the other team" when you came to enquire about your patient.   This is all because, since January 18th, we have moved to a two-team system for covering and rounding on our pediatric patients. Read More >

Family Centered Care
 
MICH's commitment to Family Centered Care has given parents on the Family Advisory Board the opportunity to interact with many staff members at the hospital, including doctors, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners.  Pediatric residents are also given the opportunity to interact with families in an informal way as they get to spend some time with a representative of our Family Advisory Board while rotating through the division of Child Life during their rotation with Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.
