Curriculum
Year 1
The first program year in urology training is devoted to inpatient, ambulatory care of the urology patient. During this year the resident develops skills in endoscopy and other urology operative procedures, as well as
an introduction to laboratory and clinical investigation that will be continued throughout the training program.
The resident may pursue areas of investigation either in the laboratory or in the clinical area. Topics of research have included the molecular basis of tumor growth and genitourinary infections. The resident attends staff conferences, rounds, and clinical activities during which time he or she learns about the diagnosis and management of patients with urologic disease.
Year 2
During this year, the resident assumes greater responsibility for patient care. The resident gains experience in urologic endoscopy, such as cystoscopy, retrograde pyelography, and urethral instrumentation and manipulation. Under the supervision of an attending urologist, the resident continues to develop new skills in urologic surgical procedures.
Year 3
In the third year of training, the senior resident is responsible for emergency center coverage and all urology consultations. Patients in these areas are reviewed with the chief resident and attending urologist. The senior resident improves his or her skills in urology procedures, such as transurethral resection, urethroscopy and open prostatectomy. The resident gains both management and surgical skills in pediatric urology.
Year 4
The final year of training, the chief resident assumes responsibility for directing the service. The chief resident conducts daily rounds with the entire resident staff, reviewing all patients on the service. The chief resident operates on all major cases, such as radical prostatectomy and cystectomy. The chief resident, with the guidance of the program director, coordinates weekly staff conferences.
During the four-year program, residents are sent to both local and national conferences, where they supplement their urology studies and meet prominent urologists from around the world.
