Maimonides Medical Center’s PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in Emergency Medicine provides one of the most unique and rewarding training environments in the country. Surrounded by the 2.5 million residents of Brooklyn, New York, Maimonides serves an incredibly varied patient population. Our patients speak many different languages and represent many different cultures. Given the diversity of our patients, Maimonides residents have the benefit of first hand experience with a broad range of pathology not available at other training centers. Our Emergency Department is one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the country.
The Pharmacy Residency in Emergency Medicine Residency at Maimonides is one of the few accredited programs in the country. The program currently accepts three PGY-2 candidates each year, along with two PGY-1 candidates.
The Emergency Department is self-contained and consists of two adult areas and one pediatric department, each with numerous treatment areas including a dedicated waiting room, resuscitation bay and triage booth. Our clinical area contains two medication rooms with numerous computer work stations located throughout the Emergency Department, which allow access to all hospital medical information systems and the Internet. We use Pyxis machines for appropriate storage of medications, and we are fully outfitted with Computerized Physician Order Entry systems to facilitate pharmacist profiling and verification of medication orders. Pharmacists conduct medication histories at the bedside, respond to medical emergencies, and assist with achieving the intended therapeutic outcomes.
