Maimonides Medical Center’s PEM fellowship provides one of the most unique and rewarding training environments in the country. Surrounded by the 2.5 million residents of Brooklyn, New York, Maimonides serves an incredibly varied patient population. Our patients speak many different languages and represent many different cultures. Given the diversity of our patients, Maimonides residents have the benefit of first hand experience with a broad range of pathology not available at other training centers. The pediatric emergency department treated nearly 35,000 patients in 2011.
The PEM fellowship at Maimonides received full accreditation in 2008 and continued accreditation in 2011. The program is a two or three-year training program (post-graduate year 4, 5, 6) and now accepts 2 fellows per year.
The pediatric emergency department is self-contained and consists of fourteen treatment areas including a dedicated pediatric waiting room, resuscitation bay and pediatric triage booth. Our clinical area also contains a dedicated radiology suite with two rooms for plain radiography and a multidetector helical CT scanner. Radiographic images (all digitized) can be viewed from any of the viewing terminals located throughout the patient care areas. There are numerous computer work stations located throughout the emergency department which allows access to all hospital medical information systems and the Internet.
