During the PGY-3 year the resident spends two months on the upper extremity service, where he/she is exposed to all aspects of care of the upper extremity patient including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder. The service provides care to traumatic injuries, congenital deformities and degenerative conditions. Each resident attends hand clinic and rotates to the hand attending surgeons’ offices so that continuity of care is ensured.
Four months are spent rotating on the orthopaedic trauma service Lutheran Medical Center trauma which provides the resident with a broad exposure to the clinical and academic aspects of caring for the multiply injured patient and those with isolated, but complex, injuries that usually fall under the purview of an orthopedic trauma sub-specialist. The Lutheran Medical Center is a busy Level-I Trauma Center in a high-density urban setting.
Residents spend another three months at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center for a comprehensive experience in pediatric orthopedics. This service provides the largest outpatient pediatric orthopedic clinic experience in the state with more than 15,000 visits annually. The clinic has significant volume in areas such as spinal dysraphism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, scoliosis and other congenital malformations including limb reductions. The resident is also given time off from clinical duties to prepare a clinical research project and present a final thesis.
Two months are spent on the sports rotation at Maimonides advances the experience of the resident to further understanding and competency in treatment of sport related injuries and degenerative afflictions both operatively and non-operatively. Their surgical cases will be followed up in the clinic or office in order to assess short and long-term outcomes. Another month is spent on Foot and Ankle service to advance their experience on treatment of foot and ankle pathology including diabetic foot.
