This elective provides clinical experience in the management of patients with a variety of colon and rectal problems. Students will be exposed to operative and medical treatments for patients with cancer and benign diseases.

Objective
The objectives of the colon and rectal surgery elective are to:
- Learn how to evaluate patients with cancer, IBD, diverticulitis and develop optimal treatment strategies
- Learn about different treatments available for benign anorectal problems and its applications
- Actively participate in the patients' care from initial evaluation to surgery and to postoperative recovery
Learning Experience
Work closely with preceptors in the inpatient and outpatient settings as an active member of the surgical team. Students will have significant operating room exposure. Students will participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and work-rounds. They will be expected to present patients and formulate treatment plans.
Feedback and Evaluation
Daily interaction. Evaluation at the completion of the elective.
