Q. When does your program begin accepting applications for your residency program?
A. Beginning in September interested applicants can submit their applications through ERAS. Applications are reviewed from October 15th thru October 30th. Applications received after October 30th will not be considered.
Q. When are interviews held?
A. Interviews are usually held from Mid-November thru December. Additional dates in January may be added depending on the availability of conference rooms. Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted via email.
Q: Who reviews the applications and selects the candidates for interviews?
A: The Review Committee reviews the applications and selects the candidates to be interviewed. The committee reviews applications from October 15th thru October 30th. Once all of the ERAS applications have been reviewed candidates will then be notified of the committee's decision by November 15th.
Q: What is the selection criterion?
A: Our criteria for selecting applicants for interviews are not solely based on the USMLE scores. A review of the applicant’s C.V., application, MSPE, transcript and letters of recommendations are also considered. An applicant’s file will not be considered if the file is incomplete and the required documents have not been received by the application deadline. Applications received after October 30th will not be considered.
Q: Which documents are required in order to apply?
A: A copy of the documents listed below is required with your ERAS application:
- A Photo
- Curriculum Vitae
- Dean’s Letter
- Medical School Transcript
- USMLE Scores (COMLEX scores will not be accepted in lieu of the USMLE scores)
- Minimum of 2 current letters of recommendations. (Please note: one letter must be from an anesthesia rotation)
- If applicable, a written summative evaluation letter from your current and/or previous Program Director (required of applicants with U.S. residency training experience)
Q: Are both USMLE Steps 1 & 2 required for a candidate’s file to be considered?
A: Both are desirable but a candidate’s file will be considered if at least Step 1 has been received by the application deadline.
Q: Are there specific USMLE Scores required?
A: We look for USMLE scores of 200 or higher and the number of attempts taken to pass.
Q: Are COMLEX Scores accepted in lieu of USMLE Scores?
A: No. COMLEX scores are no longer being accepted in lieu of USMLE Scores.
Q: Is USMLE Step 3 required to apply to your residency program?
A: No. However, incoming residents joining the Maimonides Anesthesiology Residency program (the “Program”) must provide proof that they have passed the USMLE Step 3 by March 31st of their start year with the Program. Incoming Residents who do not present evidence of passing the USMLE Step 3 by March 31st of their start year will forfeit their position with the Program, and will not be allowed to join the Program.
Q: What is a Program Director’s verification / summative evaluation letter? Why is it required?
A: Before we can consider applicants with a year or more of U.S. clinical experience the ACGME requires that we receive written verification from the Program Director for a resident who is transferring from another residency program. A Program Director’s verification includes dates of training, rotations completed, procedural/operative experience, and a summative competency-based performance evaluation.
Q. Will your program be participating in the National Residency Matching Program?
A. Yes, as an Advanced Program.
Q. What does it mean to participate in the NRMP Match as an Advanced Program?
A. Applicants interested in applying would need to apply to both PGY-1 programs (i.e. Preliminary Medicine or Surgery) and Anesthesiology programs that begin at the PGY-2 level. For example, through the upcoming NRMP Match the applicant would seek to secure a PGY-1 position in an ACGME-accredited residency program for the upcoming July and at the same time a PGY-2 position “in advance” for the following year. Q: How many positions will be available through the NRMP Match?
A: For the upcoming NRMP Match the number of positions that will be available is ten (10). All the positions will be filled through the Match.
Q: Is a PGY 1 (Clinical Base Year) offered through your program?
A: No. Interested applicants must independently apply for an ACGME accredited PGY 1 residency position within the United States. However, as a pre-requisite for joining the program, applicants accepted into our residency program are required to successfully complete an ACGME Accredited PGY-1 position prior to starting the program.
Q: What is considered an acceptable Clinical Base Year?
A. For a Clinical Base Year to be acceptable it must be completed in an ACGME-accredited residency program. Please Note: Psychiatry is NOT considered an acceptable Clinical Base Year.
Q. Is there a medical school graduation cut off year?
A. Yes. The medical school graduation date should not be more than 7 years.

Q. What are the requirements for International Medical Graduates applying to your residency program?
A. International Medical Graduates must have a minimum of one year residency training in an ACGME accredited program within the United States. Letters of recommendations provided must be from the ACGME accredited residency program. A summative evaluation letter from the Program Director is also required and must include dates of training, rotations completed, procedural and/or operative experience, and a competency-based summative performance evaluation.
