Q: Is a PGY 1 (Clinical Base Year) offered through your program?
A: No.  Interested applicants must independently apply for a PGY 1 accredited residency position in the United States.

Q: What is considered an acceptable Clinical Base Year?
A. According to the American Board of Anesthesiology, an acceptable Clinical Base Year includes training in internal or emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery or any of the surgical specialties, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice, critical care medicine, or any combination of these and osteopathic medicine. Psychiatry is not considered as an acceptable Clinical Base Year.

Q: Are Foreign Medical Graduates accepted in your residency?
A: Yes.

Q: What types of Visas are sponsored?
A: H1B and J1 Visas.

Q: Are there specific USMLE Scores required?
A: We look for USMLE scores of 85 or higher, as well as the number of attempts taken to pass. However, our criteria for selecting applicants for interviews are not solely based on their scores.  A review of their C.V., applications and letters of recommendations are also considered.

Q: Is USMLE Step 3 a requirement to apply to your residency program?
A: No.  However, candidates accepted into our program are required to pass the USMLE Step 3 and provide a copy of the results by December 31st of the CA-1 year in order to continue with the Anesthesiology residency program as of the following July.

Q: Do you require any research experience?
A: No.

Q. Is there a graduation cut off year?
A. Currently, there is no graduation cut off year.

Q. Will your program be participating in the National Residency Matching Program?
A. Yes, as an Advanced Program.

Q. What does it mean to participate in the NRMP Match as an Advanced Program?
A. Applicants interested in applying would need to apply to both PGY-1 programs (i.e. Preliminary Medicine or Surgery) and Anesthesiology programs that begin at the PGY-2 level.  For example, through the upcoming NRMP Match the applicant would seek to secure a PGY-1 position for the upcoming July and, at the same time, a PGY-2 position “in advance” for the following year. For more information regarding the National Residency Matching Program (“NRMP”), applicants should contact the NRMP at www.nrmp.org or call (202) 826-0566.

Q. Do candidates need to have a PGY-1 clinical base year in the U.S.  before applying to the Anesthesiology residency program?
A. Since we will be filling our PGY-2 positions a year in advance either through the Match or outside the Match, it is assumed that the applicant will seek an independent PGY-1 year either in the same geographic area or in a different location for the upcoming July following the Match.  However, applicants accepted into our residency program will be required to successfully complete a PGY-1 position prior to starting their Anesthesia training.

Q. How do I apply to your residency program?
A. Beginning in September, interested applicants can submit their applications through ERAS.  Interviews are scheduled throughout the months of October-December. Application deadline is November 1st.   

Q: Which documents need to be submitted in order to apply?
A: ERAS application, Curriculum Vitae, MD Diploma, USMLE or COMLEX scores, ECFMG Certificate (if applicable), Two letters of recommendation (one letter should be from your current program director or employer).

Q: Who reviews the applications and selects the candidates for interviews?
A. The Program Director reviews the applications and selects the candidates to be interviewed.  After this process, only those candidates who have been selected for an interview will be contacted.
