Are apples the miracle fruit? The cure-all for all of our afflictions? Or, is it just a convenient rhyme? We asked Dr. Andrew Yacht, Vice Chair of Medicine, to settle the issue.
“Apples contain vitamin C, which aids the immune system, and phenols, which reduce cholesterol, so there are certainly some health benefits,” states Dr. Yacht. But, does he think that eating one a day is the key to leading a healthier life? No, although it's a good first step. “Really this myth came about to promote healthy eating. The best way to reduce doctor visits is to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and get plenty of exercise,” recommends Dr. Yacht.
Verdict: MYTH – But don't let that stop you from eating your fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet, all of which are the key to living a healthier life.
