November 13, 2007; Brooklyn, NY) - Maimonides Medical Center announced today that it has received top rankings for clinical excellence in multiple services, according to a comprehensive study released by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings company.

“Five Stars” is the highest rating a hospital can get from HealthGrades. Maimonides Medical Center received more of these five-star ratings than any other hospital in New York City. Maimonides achieved the following distinctions:

Cardiology: Rated #1 in New York State for cardiology services. Maimonides also ranked among the top five percent of hospitals in the nation for cardiology services and cardiac interventions, and is a recipient of the 2008 HealthGrades Interventional Cardiology Excellence Award. In addition, Maimonides is five-star rated once again in congestive heart failure (CHF) patient outcomes.

Stroke: Rated among the top five hospitals in New York State and among the top ten percent of hospitals in the nation for treatment of stroke. Maimonides is five-star rated in stroke treatment for the seventh consecutive year, and is a recipient of the 2008 HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award.

Critical Care: Rated #1 in New York State for critical care services. Maimonides is five-star rated in critical care, and is also a recipient of the 2008 HealthGrades Critical Care Excellence Award.

Orthopedic: Maimonides is five-star rated for spine surgery and back & neck (spinal fusion) surgery.

Pulmonary: Maimonides is five-star rated in Community Acquired Pneumonia for the sixth consecutive year.
“We are delighted that our services are being recognized for an outstanding level of quality on par with the finest hospitals in New York City and nationwide,” said Maimonides President and CEO Pamela S. Brier. “Our continued high ratings in patient outcomes reflect the high standards set by our physicians, nurses and support staff.”

Maimonides is five-star rated in several categories, including maternity care, obstetrics services and female cardiac and stroke services, and is a recipient of the 2007 HealthGrades Women’s Health Excellence Award.

HealthGrades ratings are based on 40 million hospitalization records from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. For its tenth annual Hospital Quality in America Study, HealthGrades independently analyzed nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states for its ratings, assessing clinical outcomes and quality.

The 2008 HealthGrades ratings for all hospitals nationwide are available, free of charge, on the organization’s award-winning consumer Web site, located at

"HealthGrades objectively rates hospitals' performance to help consumers make better healthcare choices," said Samantha Collier, HealthGrades vice president of medical affairs. “In the New York City area, Maimonides Medical Center stands out notably in terms of delivering quality care for its patients. Patients, families and employers here truly have access to healthcare that is among the best in the nation.”
