Brooklyn, NY (February 21, 2012) – Dr. Patrick Borgen, Chair of the Department of Surgery, recently announced the appointment of Dr. Anna Serur
as Director of Colorectal Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center. Dr. Serur is a board-certified surgeon and a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
“Dr. Anna Serur is an expert in the field of laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery, and is a valuable addition to our team of surgical specialists,” said Dr. Borgen. “She has vast experience treating colon and rectal disease, particularly colon and rectal cancer, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.”
Dr. Serur also treats patients with hemorrhoidal disease, anal fissures, abscesses and fistulas. Her clinical interests include: carcinoma of the rectum, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex anal and rectal procedures. She has written book chapters and multiple research manuscripts, as well as presented at national and regional meetings and conferences.

Dr. Serur was born and raised in Moscow, Russia, and immigrated to the US with her parents at age sixteen. She later enrolled in the seven-year combined BA/MD program at Brooklyn College and SUNY-Downstate Medical School. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree Summa cum Laude and Medical Degree Magna cum Laude, Dr. Serur completed a General Surgery residency at New York Presbyterian’s Weill Cornell Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
During her residency, Dr. Serur spent two years working in the basic science research laboratory at Columbia University. She was involved in research in the Pediatric Oncology Department trying to identify novel therapies for solid organ cancer. Dr. Serur then chose to pursue specialty training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at North Shore-LIJ Health System.
The colorectal surgery division at Maimonides specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. In the treatment of cancer of the colon, rectum or anus, a multi-disciplinary approach is emphasized with participation of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists and pathologists. The colorectal service also works closely with the Center for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction & Reconstructive Surgery.
