Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program Receives Prestigious Accreditation
(July 2011) – The Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at the Maimonides Cancer Center has been granted a three-year Full Accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), administered by the American College of Surgeons.
Accreditation by the NAPBC is only conferred on those centers that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality breast care, and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. Only 5% of hospitals in the nation have achieved this prestigious designation.
“This is wonderful news for our patients,” said Dr. Patrick Borgen, Director of the Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides. “The NAPBC accreditation affirms in the most essential way that we are delivering the finest care possible for each and every one of them.”
The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 200,000 cases of invasive breast cancer occur annually in the US. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options.
According to the NAPBC, Breast Centers that achieve accreditation have demonstrated a firm commitment to offer patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease. Receiving care at an NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:
- Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
- A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
The Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides demonstrated compliance with the 27 NAPBC standards, including proficiency in the areas of clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, quality improvement and center leadership.
“This comes right on the heels of our recognition as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence,” Dr. Borgen pointed out in a reference to the recent designation conferred by the American College of Radiology. “The Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program at Maimonides literally encompasses every known modality and delivers care at the highest possible level for our patients.”
Patient care is, by definition, a team effort at the Maimonides Cancer Center. The Brooklyn Breast Cancer Program is a model of that dedication to reviewing every case from the perspective of all subspecialties. The survey process for NAPBC accreditation also was accomplished with the cooperation of the many components of the team, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, nursing, breast imaging, genetics, pathology, social work and surgery.
Now celebrating its Centennial, Maimonides Medical Center recently broke ground on a new main lobby, and is well on the way to opening a second pavilion of its Cancer Center.
