In 1911, Maimonides began as a small dispensary serving the poor and needy residents of its Brooklyn community, and over the next 100 years, grew into a 705-bed, world-class medical center. As we move into our second century of service, we continue to upgrade our facilities with the latest technology to ensure our commitment of providing high-quality, compassionate health care to the diverse populations of Brooklyn.

  • Creation of a Hybrid Operating Room, which combines all of the usual operating room capabilities with state of-the-art imaging technology. This intense form of imaging is essential will improve the overall quality of care for all of our patients by allowing surgeons to operate in the most effective manner during the most complicated surgeries.

Lobby Renovation

In 2013, Maimonides undertook a major renovation of the hospital's Main Lobby, featuring a new main entrance that welcomes all with the promise of the highest quality of care. The renovation included removing the building’s first floor façade to create a wall of windows along Tenth Avenue and around to 49th Street. New lighting, seating and multi-lingual signage create a more welcoming and easier-to-navigate space almost four times as large as the previous lobby, and which surrounds an interior courtyard. This interior space will have with plantings and a community-inspired sculpture by artist Jean Shin.

Center for Clinical Simulation

A long-term commitment to investing in new technology and pioneering advances in health care led us to decide, in 2009, that the time was right to build on earlier, small-scale investments made in the area of simulation training by the Departments of Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology to upgrade our current simulation capabilities. The result was the creation of a unified, multi-purpose, state-of-the-art simulation center sufficiently flexible to serve a wide range of caregivers. The Center is located on the fourth floor of the Research Building and includes:

  • A reconfigurable room with high-fidelity, computerized mannequins and sophisticated monitoring equipment that can function as an operating, recovery or labor-and-delivery room. It is used to teach early identification of critical disease states, pre-code scenarios, and team approaches to managing illness.
  • An emergency/intensive care room with high-fidelity adult and pediatric mannequins to practice identification and management of severe illness, as well as to train all levels of staff on interdisciplinary team skills in crisis situation – skills that are critical to patient safety.
  • A simulated patient room with a high-fidelity mannequin to train physicians and nurses to identify signs of severe distress with limited monitoring equipment.
  • A multi-purpose room housing a large array of partial task trainers, including laparoscopy machines, endoscopy and cardiac catheterization trainers, and “tissue phantoms” for practicing ultrasound techniques.
