Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US, and is a sudden and potentially devastating medical emergency. As in any medical emergency, it is critically important where a stroke patient receives care. Hospitals with stroke centers are best equipped, and the Maimonides Stroke Center has experience in delivering the full range of therapies for stroke. It’s ranked in the Top 5 percent of stroke centers in the nation and rated one of the top two stroke facilities in New York State. The Maimonides Stroke Center has the latest technologies to treat stroke patients from the emergency room all the way to discharge.

The advance of diagnostic capabilities has paralleled and often enabled treatment of neurological disorders previously considered untreatable. At Maimonides we use the most advanced technology, delivered with skill and compassion.  Our highly trained neurosurgical team provides surgical treatment for vascular, tumorous and degenerative lesions of the brain, skull base and spine.

Interventional neuroradiology is a minimally invasive approach in the treatment of vascular diseases (aneurysms, vascular malformations, and tumors of the brain, spine, head and neck.), that in the past would have required surgery. While traditional vascular neurosurgery requires cutting through skin, brain, bone and muscle to reach the site we use three-dimensional X-ray imaging to guide us as we insert a tiny tube into the leg artery and address the clogged blood vessel. In case of stroke, the revolutionary MERCI Retriever system, can remove the clot entirely, reversing or reducing patient symptoms even eight hours after the onset of a stroke.

Neuro-Ophthalmology is a integral component of the neuroscience team at Maimonides. Neuro-ophthalmologists diagnose and treat conditions that are related to connections between the eye and brain (almost 50% of our brain is utilized for vision related tasks) as well as eye related symptoms due to neurologic conditions.

Common neuro-ophthalmologic conditions include:  anisocoria (uneven pupils), anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, blepharospasm, drusen, hemifacial spasm, microvascular cranial nerve palsy, migraine, myasthenia gravis, optic neuritis, pituitary and chiasmal tumor, pseudotumor cerebri, and thyroid eye.
