Specialized Vein Treatment
Veins are important structures which return blood from the legs and other regions back toward the heart. However, sometimes, the valves inside your veins become damaged as a result of venous disease. This affects how well the valves function, causing them to not close completely, which can lead to incorrect blood flow.
Deep Venous Thrombosis
Deep Venous Thrombosis (or DVTs) result from clot forming
in a major vein. These clots carry the risk of dislodging from the
vein and being carried to the lungs resulting in a potentially fatal
problem called a pulmonary embolus (PE). Many of these clots can be
treated with medications to thin the blood, but some require clot
removal. Our surgeons can remove this clot when necessary using
minimally invasive techniques by suctioning them out using catheters and
wires inserted into the veins. In addition, they can also surgically
retrieve the clot from these veins.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins result from problems with the valves that
line the vein walls. These problems can lead to backward pressure in the
veins, causing smaller veins to engorge with blood and manifest as
varicosities or grape-like protuberances of veins under the skin. Our
team uses non-invasive ultrasound techniques to diagnose these problems,
and can then initiate a treatment plan that starts with good
compression therapy with tight socks to help alleviate the problem. In
addition, our surgeons are capable of performing minimally invasive
closures of these offending veins using laser or heat therapy. This
procedure can be done in the office, with the patient going home
directly from the office immediately following the procedure. In
addition, our surgeons can perform other procedures to alleviate the
symptoms of varicose veins, including surgical vein stripping in the
operating room and injections in the office.
