Our Cardiac Service Staff
The Cardiac Service Areas are well staffed by highly trained, professional team of Nurse Practitioners (NP), Physician Assistants (PA) and Registered Nurses (RN). The professional staff is supported by patient care technicians (PCT) and specialized technical staff. Through this multi-disciplinary team approach, the cardiac service staff provides comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Cardiac Service Nurse Practitioners
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have completed specialized educational and clinical programs. Cardiac Service NPs practice in collaboration with Maimonides cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as a patient’s primary care physician. NPs supervise and assist in the management of a patient’s condition alongside his or her physician. They take medical histories, conduct physical exams, order and interpret lab work and diagnostic tests, prescribe medications and therapies, and perform treatments. Cardiac Service NPs are staffed in the Cardiology Pre-Admission Testing Area, Ambulatory Cardiac Catheterization Unit, Congestive Heart Failure Program and Clinic, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) and Cardiac Step-down/Telemetry Unit, Thoracic Program and Cardiothoracic Outpatient Program.
Cardiac Service Physician Assistants
Physician Assistants (PAs) are healthcare professionals that are licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of our cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Physician assistants conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, write prescriptions and perform procedures. Cardiac Service PAs work in the Maimonides Ambulatory Cardiac Catheterization Unit, Cardiac Telemetry/Stepdown Unit, Electrophysiology (EP) Laboratory and Cardiac operating rooms.
Cardiac Service Registered Nurses
Registered Nurses (RNs) provide expert nursing care to our cardiac patient population. All Maimonides Cardiac Service RNs are ACLS (Advanced Certification in Life Support) trained and undergo competency based education programs designed to meet the need of our specialized cardiac patients. These RNs are at the forefront of a patient’s care. RNs are the backbone of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Ambulatory Cardiac Cath Unit, EP lab, Cardiac Step-down/Telemetry Unit, Coronary Care ICU (CCU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), Cardiothoracic OR and Nursing Research.
Cardiac Service Patient Care Technicians
Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) work under the supervision of registered nurses to assist our patients with tasks they may not be able to do for themselves during their hospital stay. PCTs play a critical role in the delivery of patient care, since they have the most patient-to-medical staff contact on the health care team. Maimonides PCTs are found throughout the Cardiac Service Areas.
Cardiac Perfusionists assist cardiac surgeons in the operating room and are responsible for the heart-lung machine during heart surgery. The perfusion team ensures that the heart-lung machines are well maintained and in proper working condition. Maimonides cardiac perfusionists are specialized professionals who have undergone vigorous training in accredited programs.
Registered Cardiovascular Technologists
Registered Cardiovascular Technologists (RCVTs) assist cardiologists in specialized invasive procedures. They are specifically trained to prepare patients and assist physicians during cardiac catheterization procedures. Maimonides RCVTs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals and work exclusively in our Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
Cardiac Echocardiographers are trained to use a special ultrasound instrument (Echocardiograph) that enables cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons to assess a patient’s cardiovascular anatomy. They play an integral role in helping physicians determine an accurate diagnosis. All Maimonides Cardiac Echocardiographers are specially trained and have completed an accredited program.
Cardiac EKG Technicians
Cardiac EKG Technicians are responsible for performing a diagnostic test (EKG) that monitors a patient’s heart rate and rhythm. EKG technicians are an essential part of the Maimonides cardiac team.
