Our Preventive & Diagnostic Services
Early detection and accurate diagnosis play a key role in the successful treatment of thoracic cancers. Maimonides Cancer Center’s highly qualified imaging specialists possess a unique expertise in thoracic cancers and use the latest state-of-the-art imaging equipment to screen for and diagnose these cancers.
Our thoracic oncology experts utilize advanced diagnostic techniques and perform the most minimally invasive biopsies possible. These state-of-the-art techniques include autofluorescence bronchoscopy and narrow band imaging bronchoscopy—both of which can detect irregularities not seen with typical white-light bronchoscopy. Our physicians also have extensive experience in endobronchial ultrasound, an innovative procedure that allows physicians to diagnose or determine cancer staging with minimal surgical incisions.
Following a biopsy, the patient’s tissue sample will be sent to our excellent thoracic pathologists for accurate diagnosis and staging to help our team develop the best treatment plan.
At Maimonides, we offer a complete range of screening and diagnostic options, including:
Maimonides also has preventive services available for thoracic cancers, including a smoking cessation program and the
Lung Cancer Action Project to detect early stage lung cancer. We offer a pulmonary nodule clinic for rapid assessment and ongoing management of lung nodules—small spots on the lung, most of which are benign.
For esophageal cancer, our physicians specialize in the Barrx procedure to treat Barretts esophagus, a disorder caused by acid reflux which increases the risk of getting esophageal cancer. In addition, our renowned Nissen Center for the Treatment of Heartburn & Esophageal Disease offers minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat chronic acid reflux.
