Treating genitourinary cancers can involve surgery, ablation, radiation therapy, systemic therapy such as chemotherapy – or any combination of these. At the Maimonides Cancer Center, we believe a collaborative team approach is key to successful cancer treatment, and our multidisciplinary specialists work closely together to develop the best treatment plan for each individual patient.
Our urologic oncology experts have extensive expertise in the latest and most effective treatment approaches available, including kidney-sparing surgery for renal tumors, cystectomy with continent urinary diversion, testicular tumor surgery, and multimodal management of bladder and prostate cancer.
Our urologic oncology surgeons are pioneers in the application of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgical techniques for a wide range of urologic cancers. These minimally invasive techniques minimize
the trauma of more traditional surgery, speed recovery, and help our patients avoid longer hospitalizations. Maimonides was the first hospital in Brooklyn to offer robotic surgery, and we have the most experience in robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgical techniques in the borough.
In our state-of-the-art surgical facilities, the vast majority of urologic procedures are performed using laparoscopic techniques. Our urologic surgeons use these sophisticated techniques for a variety of procedures – from radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer to partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer to robotic-assisted laparoscopic intracorporeal urinary diversion for bladder cancers.
For patients who are not candidates for surgery or have other reasons to not have surgery, the Maimonides Cancer Center offers minimally invasive image-guided cryoablation for kidney tumors. Cryoablation, which freezes and destroys cancer cells, for these types of tumors is more effective than radio frequency ablations and our surgeons and interventional radiologists have the most experience with cryoablation in the area.
Radiation treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with surgery to treat urologic cancers. At the Maimonides Cancer Center, we provide patients with the very latest evidence-based radiation treatments in our state-of-the-art radiation therapy unit, which has been recognized as one of the safest and
most accurate units in the country.
Our dedicated radiation oncologists and medical physicists and therapists utilize state-of-the-art treatment planning equipment to target tumors and spare unnecessary toxicity to normal tissue. Once a treatment plan is developed, our radiation oncology team uses the most advanced therapies available for radiation delivery, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), 3-Dimensional Conformal Radiotherapy (3D-CRT), and High Dose Rate Remote Afterloading Brachytherapy.
Chemotherapy, hormone, or other systemic therapies may also be a part of the treatment plan for urologic cancers, and these treatments are delivered to patients in Maimonides’ beautiful, modern infusion suite. Members of our medical oncology team specialize in the various urologic cancers, and have the knowledge and expertise necessary to match the disease with the best therapies.
Medical oncologists at the Maimonides Cancer Center follow the latest treatment guidelines of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and are also involved in clinical research protocols for innovative agents or dosing methods, which give our patients access to state-of-the-art therapies that are not widely available elsewhere.
