Brooklyn, NY (February 8 , 2012) – Dr. Patrick Borgen
, Chair of the Department of Surgery, recently announced the appointment of Dr. Loren Harris
as Director of General Thoracic Surgery at Maimonides Medical Center. Dr. Harris is a board-certified thoracic surgeon with extensive clinical and academic experience.
“Dr. Loren Harris is tops in his field,” said Dr. Borgen. “We are delighted he has come on board to bring his considerable expertise to our patients in Brooklyn and beyond.”
Dr. Harris received his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine where he graduated in the top 10% of his class and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his training in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Medical Center. Honing his surgical skills at multiple metropolitan hospitals, Dr. Harris has also distinguished himself as a teacher, and maintains an academic appointment at NYU.
“I look forward to working with the talented team of thoracic surgeons at Maimonides,” said Dr. Harris. “This is an exciting time in our field, with advances making surgery safer than ever for all patients.”
According to Dr. Harris, minimally invasive techniques allow most thoracic surgeries to be performed without the use of large incisions. A highly specialized minimally invasive procedure called the VATS technique, allows surgeons to perform major chest surgery without having to cut or spread the ribs, reducing the patient’s time in the hospital, as well as their pain and recovery time after the procedure.
Dr. Harris has published and presented extensively throughout his career both nationally and internationally. His main research and clinical interests are in the appropriate staging and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. Dr. Harris is an editor of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) bi-monthly publication, Pulmonary Perspectives, and is a co-author of two chapters in the upcoming Diagnosis and Management Guidelines for Lung Cancer to be published by the ACCP.
The division of General Thoracic Surgery at Maimonides treats the following conditions: benign and malignant tumors and disorders of the lungs and pleural spaces, esophagus, mediastinum (thymus gland, trachea and airways, etc.), and chest wall; gastro-esophageal reflux disease; para-esophageal hernias; hyperhidrosis (“sweaty palm disease”); and Zenker’s diverticulum. They also provide the following treatment modalities: lung cancer surgery, laser surgery, laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, laparoscopic Heller myotomy, endoscopic thoracoscopic sympathectomy, esophagectomy, VATS, and all aspects of thoracic and foregut surgery.
