Early Detection Is a Cornerstone of Successful Treatment

Early detection is the cornerstone of successful breast cancer treatment, and the Maimonides Breast Cancer Program features both the expertise and the advanced technology necessary to ensure the most accurate diagnosis possible. In fact, our program is the first and only Brooklyn-based program of its kind to be designated an American College of Radiology Center of Excellence in the three areas of mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy.

Our highly qualified breast imaging specialists limit their practice exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Using the finest tools available today, this breast imaging team provides minimally invasive biopsies that frequently prevent the need for surgery.

Featuring the most advanced radiologic equipment for diagnosis, our center is one of the few units in the New York area that is entirely digital, which reduces radiation exposure and increases accuracy. Our breast cancer team members look at the images as they are taken in real time, meaning that the patient won’t have to return for any necessary extra diagnostic tests—it all happens right then.

Our state-of-the-art technology includes Brooklyn’s only 3T MRI dedicated solely to breast imaging, which is twice as powerful as previous MRIs and provides the highest level of diagnostic imaging.  In addition, our Center uses the most advanced Hologic Selenia digital mammography and breast imaging system as well as a breast-specific gamma imaging device (BSGI), a novel and emerging technology which captures the actual cellular function of breast tissue.

The Maimonides Breast Cancer Program’s pathology team has extensive experience in diagnosing a wide range of breast disease, especially those with questions of cancer or borderline cancers. Our pathology department provides expert review and diagnosis of breast core biopsies or other breast tissue specimens. Unlike many hospitals that send specimens to outside laboratories, virtually all of the testing that’s required to categorize breast cancer is performed in-house at Maimonides, which ensures its quality and accuracy.
